Did you know that you can mix and match the blocks from our Bunny Trail and Paper Tulips patterns? It is such a perfect Easter combo, don't you think?!
A few notes before we start
- Each block from Bunny Trail finishes at 12" x 12", which is the same as two of the smaller sized tulips blocks from Paper Tulips, including a vertical sashing strip between the two tulip blocks (see diagram below).
Please note: the block substitutions do NOT work for the larger tulip blocks included in Paper Tulips. If you would like to make a larger quilt than a baby size, you would need to add extra rows and/or columns, still using the smaller tulip blocks! - Finished quilt size of the shown example: 37" x 44" (identical to the Paper Tulips baby quilt)
- You will need the following patterns:
-
- Bunny Trail (get the pdf or printed booklet)
- Paper Tulips (get the pdf or printed booklet)
- The fabric requirements for the quilt top are basically those of Paper Tulips, plus those of Bunny Trail. Depending on how many tulips you're replacing with bunnies and Easter eggs, you might just end up needing a little less fabric for the flower heads and stems and leaves.
Cutting instructions
- You’ll only need to prepare background pieces BG1-BG3 from your Bunny Trail pattern (skip BG4 and BG5).
- From the Paper Tulips pattern, you'll need the following:
- Print all FPP templates from Bunny Trail, plus 9 smaller tulip head FPP templates from Paper Tulips.
Piecing your quilt top
Making your bunny and egg blocks
- Piece the 3 FPP block from your Bunny Trail pattern.
Making your tulip blocks
- Piece 9 tulip head units as described in the Paper Tulips pattern.
- Piece 5 stem units for the shorter tulip blocks (steps 3-6 from Paper Tulips).
- Piece 4 stem units for the taller tulip blocks (steps 7-10 from Paper Tulips).
- Assemble your units from steps 2-5 into 9 tulip blocks (5 short + 4 tall tulips).
Assembling your quilt top
6. Refer to Fig. 13 and steps 13-16 from Paper Tulips to assemble your quilt top, while treating each of your bunny and egg blocks as if they were a unit of [tulip block - vertical sashing strip - tulip block].
And that's it! Time to finish and use your brand-new Easter quilt!
More Easter mash-up projects
